Welcome to my blog, curious minded reader. My name, as you might have deduced with a little bit of sleuthing, is Michael Shaw. I write about strange worlds, quirky and colorful characters, and bizarre and unusual situations featuring elements of the inexplicable, improbably, and downright impossible.
What does that mean? It means that I have a penchant for exploring the dark, mysterious, and unexplained. I've dabbled in a number of genres in my short stories and novels, including mystery, suspense, horror, fantasy, and science fiction.
Much of my work features elements of the supernatural and macabre with a touch of humor, as you might expect from someone who has been inspired by some of the storytelling greats like Stephen King, David Lynch, Ray Bradbury, Alfred Hitchcock, Tana French, Louise Penny, Douglas Adams, and Isaac Asimov, to name a few. I like to imagine characters who are normal, everyday people like you or me who are thrown into extraordinary situations.
A little biographical info about me, if you're interested. I am a co-founder and served as the inaugural president of the Pitman Writers' Guild, a critique-focused group of writers from and around Pitman in Southern, New Jersey. I'm also a member of the Delaware Valley Chapter, Sisters in Crime, where I recently began serving as secretary. I'm a past recipient of the Leon B. Burstein / Mystery Writers of America Scholarship for Mystery Writers, a recognition for which I am extremely proud.
I'm originally from Springfield, Delaware County, Pennsylvania and a proud graduate of Springfield High School (Go Cougars). I received my bachelors degrees in Political Science and Criminal Justice from Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales (now known as DeSales University) in the Lehigh Valley. My wife, Ashley, and I currently reside in Pitman, New Jersey - a delightful small suburban Philadelphia town in South Jersey filled with terrific, normal, everyday people just waiting to be thrown into extraordinary situations. We have two dogs - Eleanor Roosevelt and Bogart, and two cats - Gatsby and Voodoo.
Thank you for visiting my site, curious minded reader. Let's unravel some mysteries and uncover some secrets together!
-Michael.
